Although most of the fabric handbags that one sees in the stores are not made by hand, certain names are, and these bags are quite expensive. Even more expensive are those fabric handbags that are especially made for certain occasions, stores and events. These are usually designer bags with a certain style, feel and “je ne sais qua” to them that the bag connoisseur can detect as far away as the parking lot. Fabric handbags are also one of those accessories that seem to float in and out of style, and their use is very dependent on the type of person and the occasion.

Handcrafted Fabric Handbags

Fully handcrafted fabric handbags are made by real craftspeople. They start with the raw materials and then cut the fabric to standard or custom design and typically sew the material using a specialized sewing machine or by hand. Such fabric handbags may be a real work of art. In fact one of the fashionable types of fabric handbags actually use quilted materials for the bag itself. Once the outer bag has been completed the internal lining, pockets, zippers and other stuff are added to the basic fabric bag to round out the style of the bag.

Available Fabrics And Patterns

Fabric handbags can be made out of almost any material. Perhaps the most common forms are made out of materials that are heavily patterned. These patterns are similar to those often found in rugs and ties and are classified in France as Jacquard weaves. These patterns typically have bright repeating patterns and the materials used are heavy cottons. Many fabric handbags have pictures on them as well. These pictures can be of famous people such as Marilyn Monroe. These pictures can be dogs, cats or other animals. Some custom bags may even have pictures of horses, mules or donkeys on them depending on their owners’ tastes in pets or careers.

One very special set of fabrics that may be used in some custom fabric handbags is carbon fiber. Carbon fibers may be weaved together to form a very strong lightweight bag that can withstand almost any typical use and will be also heat and water resistant. In some cases one can line these strong bags with Kevlar to make them bullet proof. However, it is not clear what real use this would be other than preserving a wallet or other treasured item contained in your bag, and it would make the bag quite heavy.
